Some of her followers were utterly vapid and/or outrageous heretics, but she wasn't. She was quite taken aback when various Catholic Flower Children adopted the Catholic Worker movement as their own, smoked pot, had premarital sex with each other, etc., etc. Quite a few American Catholics disliked (or dislike) Dorothy Day because she was such a lefty, but I think she was more a Catholic than she was a lefty.

As for Simone Weil, who put off being baptized for so long, she might have actually died without being baptized (accounts differ), her principal heresy (as far as I have read so far) was to believe you could be a Catholic without even wanting to be baptized, and that by not being baptized she was in solidarity with the unbaptized, whose religious beliefs Catholicism should somehow include. Simone was so interested in the Other she didn't want him to be excluded in any way. This is a simplification, of course, but really, when I think that she was apparently a major influence on Paul VI my hair stands on end.

There is a LOT of good in Simone's writing, just as there is a lot of good in Origen's writing, too. (I have just checked the spelling on Wiki, and Wiki observes that he was one of the few Early Church Fatheres not to be canonized. Well, of course not, poor sweet. Some of his ideas were even more bizarre than the weirder ones of Weil's.Mrs McLeanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18095035617334068201noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-670426779858438488.post-87803290122526220742015-10-22T21:20:48.111+01:002015-10-22T21:20:48.111+01:00Hello There. I peruse your blog at times, and wanted to share with you that another faithful Pole who you might find very interesting is Karolina Lanckoronska. In her later years, she became a friend of St. Pope John Paul II (whose feast day is today!!), and wrote Wspomnienia Wojenne, which has been translated into English under the title Michelangelo in Ravensbruck. Her detached and objective insights are fascinating, and so too is her faith. All the best in your Polish endeavors!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-670426779858438488.post-34506328795728174952015-10-22T17:01:51.153+01:002015-10-22T17:01:51.153+01:00I have been interested in Simone Weil too but I ha...I have been interested in Simone Weil too but I had never heard that she was a
heretic. Could you elaborate exactly what her heresy was? Apparently Dorothy Day wasn't that orthodox either. There are so many blogs and commentaries out there about the disaster that the Synod of the Family has proven to be, and everything seems like doom and gloom. I for one feel like I urgently need some spiritual uplift during this time which seems as if it will get worse and worse for faithful Christians, with no good news in sight. Could you write something on this, or can you recommend a blog/book that might be useful for these sad times?
Thank you!
JulianaJulianahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14247181189628757027noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-670426779858438488.post-28148887404021760142015-10-19T08:58:40.295+01:002015-10-19T08:58:40.295+01:00I spoke about Saint Edith Stein (Teresa Benedetta ...I spoke about Saint Edith Stein (Teresa Benedetta of the Cross), Servant of God Dorothy Day and....er....Simone Weil. Simone Weil was one of my big heroes when I first read about her in theology school although there are aspects of her personality tha troubled me. However, when I wrote about her this time, I realized that she was a very serious, and sadly influential, heretic. So was Origen, of course--so perhaps we can learn from Weil what is good while condemning very strongly what was bad.Mrs McLeanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18095035617334068201noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-670426779858438488.post-31951701892582180362015-10-18T21:18:29.349+01:002015-10-18T21:18:29.349+01:00Which other Saints did you speak about in that lec...Which other Saints did you speak about in that lecture? I love it that she clearly loved God and others and wasn't fearful or selfish, but still wasn't a nun or wife. I would really love to know more about her!
